Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar disbursed Rs 456.12 crore directly to the bank accounts of 6,51,602 flood-affected families across 12 districts, providing each with Rs 7,000 as gratuitous relief. The transfer, conducted at a function at Kumar’s official residence in Patna, follows his recent decision to increase relief from Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000 per family.
The funds aim to support families grappling with severe flooding caused by torrential rains swelling rivers like the Kosi, Gandak, and Bagmati in districts including Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Samastipur, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Munger, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, and Katihar.
The initiative, announced by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), reflects a swift response to the crisis, with Kumar directing officials to maintain vigilance as the India Meteorological Department forecasts continued rainfall into September. The event was attended by Disaster Management Minister Vijay Kumar Mandal, Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena, Development Commissioner Pratyaya Amrit, and Water Resources Principal Secretary Santosh Kumar Mall.
Posts on X from @ANI and @News18India highlighted the scale of the relief effort, noting the direct benefit transfer as a lifeline for thousands. The floods, impacting over 30 lakh people, have submerged villages and disrupted connectivity, with NDRF and SDRF teams deployed for rescue operations. Kumar’s administration remains on high alert to mitigate further damage as the monsoon persists.
