Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday highlighted the state’s remarkable progress in wildlife conservation, revealing that the tiger population has risen from 70 in 2006 to 227 in 2022. The CM credited the success to strong political commitment, community participation, and coordinated conservation measures.
In a post on X, CM Sarma said, “Assam’s conservation efforts reflect strong commitment and collective action. Today, our state stands among the safest habitats not only for rhinos but for diverse wildlife. My gratitude to the people for their heartfelt support in this journey.” Public cooperation, he noted, has been crucial in ensuring long-term protection and minimizing human-wildlife conflict.
Assam’s protected areas, including Kaziranga, Manas, Orang, and Nameri National Parks, have played a central role in safeguarding endangered species. Kaziranga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinos, while Manas has seen a revival of tigers and rare species like the pygmy hog.

Officials attribute the tiger population surge to a combination of strict anti-poaching measures, improved intelligence networks, enhanced patrolling, and the use of modern technologies such as camera traps and drones. Collaboration between forest departments and security agencies has further strengthened wildlife protection.
Community involvement through eco-development committees, awareness programs, and local participation has been key in maintaining harmony between humans and wildlife. Infrastructure upgrades within protected areas and better facilities for forest staff have also contributed to safer habitats for animals.
CM Sarma emphasized that Assam’s conservation achievements extend beyond tigers, benefiting elephants, deer, birds, and other species. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continue strengthening wildlife protection to preserve Assam’s natural heritage for future generations.
