In a resolute step toward justice for the late Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg, the Assam government has requested the Gauhati High Court to establish a fast-track court to expedite the trial surrounding his death on September 19, 2025, in Singapore. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on October 17, 2025, that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, aims to file a chargesheet by November. The state will appoint a special public prosecutor to ensure a swift and thorough legal process, reflecting the urgency to address the tragedy that has gripped Assam.
The Assam cabinet also approved the formation of a committee to design a memorial honoring Garg, whose music defined the state’s cultural identity. The SIT is set to travel to Singapore on October 20 to meet local police on October 21, a collaboration facilitated by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. This international probe seeks to unravel the circumstances of Garg’s drowning, with allegations of foul play intensifying after seven arrests, including band members and his manager, all now in judicial custody. The SIT’s findings are expected to clarify conflicting narratives surrounding the incident.
Public unrest has added complexity, with violent protests erupting on October 15 outside Baksa District Jail, where five accused were transferred. Sarma reported that approximately 150 protesters attacked the convoy, damaging vehicles and injuring police, media, and locals. Two injured individuals are recovering at AIIMS, Guwahati, while authorities have identified culprits via video footage. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS and internet suspensions remain in place in Baksa to curb further violence, with police clarifying they did not initiate the clash.

The push for a fast-track trial and memorial underscores Assam’s commitment to honoring Garg’s legacy while seeking accountability. With over 60 FIRs consolidated under the CID and a CBI probe also underway, the state navigates a delicate balance between public grief and procedural rigor. As the SIT prepares for its Singapore mission, Assam braces for answers in a case that has become a rallying cry for justice across the state.
