In a significant step toward strengthening security, the Assam state cabinet has approved the creation of the 10th Assam Police Battalion at Sonapure, near Guwahati, with a budget of Rs 260 crore. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that the new battalion will enhance the state’s law enforcement framework, equipping it with modern facilities to address growing security demands. This move is expected to bolster public safety and improve policing in key areas of Assam.
The cabinet also announced a 20% bonus for tea garden workers under the Assam Tea Corporation, timed perfectly for the Durga Puja festivities. This financial incentive aims to support the livelihoods of workers who drive Assam’s tea industry, a cornerstone of the state’s economy. The decision reflects the government’s commitment to uplifting its labor force during a culturally significant period.
To promote inclusivity in education, the cabinet approved bilingual question papers for the Combined Competitive (Preliminary) Examination (CCE) conducted by the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC). By offering papers in both English and Assamese, the initiative seeks to level the playing field for candidates from rural and vernacular backgrounds. However, the ‘Comprehension’ section of General Studies Paper-II will remain in English to ensure consistency in evaluation.

In a boost to cultural infrastructure, the 5,000-capacity ‘Jyoti Bishnu Auditorium’ in Guwahati will now be managed by the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra Society. This decision positions the auditorium as a premier venue for cultural events, aiming to preserve and promote Assam’s rich artistic heritage while hosting large-scale performances.
Additionally, the cabinet enhanced the working conditions for 65 Science and Mathematics Facilitators under the Assam Science, Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC). The approved measures include higher remuneration, better leave benefits, and an annual appraisal system, aimed at improving the quality of education and encouraging innovation in science and mathematics across the state.
These decisions, finalized in Sunday’s cabinet meeting, showcase Assam’s focus on security, economic welfare, education, and cultural development, setting the stage for holistic progress.
