Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday outlined the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) governance vision for West Bengal, stating that building “Sonar Bangla” is the collective responsibility of the party. His remarks came in Kolkata after announcing senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari as the Leader of the BJP Legislative Party, a decision that formally positions him as the party’s chief ministerial face in the state.
Shah, addressing party workers after the announcement, described Adhikari as the central figure of the BJP’s future leadership in West Bengal. He said the mandate given by the people reflected strong trust in the BJP and its national leadership. He also expressed gratitude to voters for what he termed a historic political shift in the state, crediting them for supporting the party’s vision of governance and development.
Highlighting the BJP’s electoral performance, Shah said the party’s victory marked a significant turning point in the state’s political landscape after years of dominance by previous governments. He added that the responsibility of fulfilling public expectations now rested with BJP workers and leadership, who must work towards achieving the broader goal of “Sonar Bangla,” a term associated with cultural pride and development.

The Union Home Minister further stated that the vision for West Bengal aligns with the ideas of inclusivity, progress and fear-free governance. He referenced cultural themes and historical ideals associated with Bengal’s intellectual heritage, saying the state must move towards a future where citizens can live with dignity and confidence. He also reiterated that the party would work to strengthen governance structures to meet the expectations of the electorate.
Suvendu Adhikari, who has now been formally named Leader of the BJP Legislative Party, is set to assume a key leadership role following the party’s electoral success. His selection comes after a meeting chaired by Shah in Kolkata, where the decision was finalised. Party leaders have indicated that Adhikari’s appointment marks a major organisational step as the BJP prepares to form its government in the state.
With the announcement, the BJP has positioned itself for a new administrative phase in West Bengal, signalling a shift in leadership dynamics. Shah’s remarks underlined the party’s intent to translate its electoral mandate into governance, while emphasising development, public trust and long-term political transformation under the “Sonar Bangla” vision.
