Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the International Day of Yoga celebrations at Kolkata's Red Road on Sunday, highlighting the importance of yoga in promoting healthy ageing and overall well-being. The event was attended by several political leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, along with ministers and public representatives. Dressed in a white T-shirt and trousers, the Prime Minister joined participants in performing yoga exercises as part of the nationwide observance.
The 12th International Day of Yoga is being celebrated under the theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing." According to the government, this year's theme focuses on enhancing not only lifespan but also "healthspan" by promoting physical vitality, emotional resilience and mobility as people grow older. The initiative seeks to encourage individuals of all age groups to adopt healthier lifestyles through regular yoga practice.
Addressing the gathering, Modi stressed that yoga can help individuals maintain and even enhance their potential as they age. He said the concept of healthy ageing involves ensuring that growing older does not diminish a person's capabilities. According to the Prime Minister, yoga supports continuous personal development by improving flexibility, strength and overall energy levels throughout life.

The Prime Minister also underlined the broader benefits of yoga beyond physical fitness. He described yoga as a lifelong learning process that enables people to better manage their health and well-being through increased self-awareness.
Highlighting the global significance of the International Day of Yoga, Modi said June 21, traditionally known as the longest day of the year in many parts of the world, has evolved into one of the largest community celebrations globally because of yoga. He noted that the practice has the unique ability to bring people together across countries, cultures and age groups, reinforcing its growing international appeal.
Calling on citizens to integrate yoga into their daily routines, the Prime Minister said the practice should not be confined to a single day or event. He described yoga as more than a form of physical exercise, calling it an expression of the human spirit that transcends age and background. The message formed a central theme of this year's celebrations, encouraging people to embrace yoga as a long-term lifestyle choice that supports healthy and active living.
