Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee has sought additional time from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to respond to a notice issued over alleged irregularities linked to property valuation and the reported demolition of an unauthorised portion of his residence in Bhabanipur. The development comes after municipal authorities recently served formal notices regarding constructions at his properties in south Kolkata, prompting an official response from the senior TMC leader.
According to civic officials, the KMC had issued notices to Banerjee’s residences at Kalighat Road and Harish Mukherjee Road, asking for clarification on whether proper permissions were obtained for additional construction work. The municipal body has also raised concerns about alleged unauthorised structures at his Harish Mukherjee Road residence, known as “Santiniketan,” and indicated that demolition proceedings for the identified portion may be carried out if violations are confirmed after due process.
Banerjee, through a letter submitted by his legal representatives, has reportedly requested a 10-day extension to file his reply. The current deadline set by the civic body was scheduled for Monday, but officials confirmed that requests for extensions are often considered in such cases. The KMC is expected to review the request before deciding whether to grant additional time for compliance and documentation submission.

The controversy has also drawn attention to broader scrutiny of multiple properties linked to the TMC leader, with reports suggesting that around 17 properties associated with him are under civic surveillance. While officials have not made further public disclosures, the ongoing review process is part of routine enforcement actions related to building regulations and urban development norms in the city.
The issue gained further political attention after Banerjee recently reacted to media queries about the notice while leaving a meeting at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat. At the time, he questioned the basis of the allegations and demanded clarity on which specific portions of the property were deemed illegal. His remarks added to the growing political discourse surrounding the municipal action.
The matter remains under review by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, which is expected to take a final decision after examining Banerjee’s response. Officials have stated that further action, including any demolition steps, will depend on compliance, documentation, and verification of building permissions under applicable municipal regulations.
