A moderate earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the Ladakh region on Monday, with tremors felt across parts of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property following the seismic activity.
According to officials, the earthquake occurred at 11:51 am, with its epicentre located in the Leh area of Ladakh. Residents in several districts reported feeling tremors of varying intensity, prompting people to briefly move out of buildings as a precautionary measure.
Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the local Meteorological (MET) Department, confirmed the details of the quake while speaking to Indo-Asian News Service (IANS). He said the earthquake struck at a depth of about 171 kilometres inside the Earth’s crust, with coordinates recorded at latitude 36.71 degrees north and longitude 74.32 degrees east.

The tremors were experienced across a wide geographical area, including parts of Jammu and Kashmir, though their impact differed depending on location. Emergency services and local administrations remained on alert in the immediate aftermath, monitoring the situation for any delayed reports of damage or injuries.
Ladakh and the adjoining Himalayan region fall within a seismically active zone and have experienced earthquakes of varying magnitudes in the past. Experts note that while deeper earthquakes often reduce surface damage, residents are advised to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines during and after seismic events.
Officials said further assessments were underway, and updates would be issued if any damage or aftershocks were reported. For now, authorities have urged the public to stay calm, avoid panic, and remain attentive to advisories from disaster management agencies.
