A 34-year-old man named Sunny Singh was found hanging inside his rented house in Kolkata’s Sarshuna area late Tuesday night, prompting his family to allege murder by his wife and her relatives. Police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination, which confirmed death due to suffocation from hanging. No other external injury marks were reported apart from ligature marks on the neck.
According to preliminary police information, Singh lived with his wife Punita Singh and their young daughter Tanisha. He reportedly had a habit of regular drinking, which frequently led to heated arguments between the couple. On Monday night, a major dispute escalated, during which Singh allegedly threw Punita and their daughter out of the house. Police intervention later allowed the mother and child to return home that same night.
The following evening, Singh’s body was discovered hanging from a noose in one room of the house. The door to the room where Punita was staying was locked from the outside. With help from neighbours, she reportedly climbed down from the balcony, opened the main door, and entered to find her husband’s body. Neighbours alerted the Sarshuna police station, and officers promptly arrived to secure the scene and transport the body to Vidyasagar State General Hospital for autopsy.

Singh’s sister, Sangeeta Shaw, lodged a formal complaint at the police station last night, accusing Punita and her brother Rakesh Paswan of murder. Acting on the complaint, authorities have launched an investigation and begun interrogating the named individuals. Police are examining all circumstances, including the couple’s history of domestic disputes, to determine whether the death was suicide or homicide.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over domestic violence and timely police response in such cases in urban neighbourhoods.
