Maharashtra’s cabinet has unleashed a wave of transformative infrastructure projects, approving massive metro expansions and road developments across Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, signalling a bold leap toward modern urban mobility.
Leading the charge is Mumbai’s Metro Line-11, connecting Wadala to CSMT and the iconic Gateway of India, with a whopping Rs 23,487.51 crore budget. This ambitious project aims to streamline travel in the bustling metropolis. Meanwhile, Thane gets a futuristic ring metro and an elevated corridor linking to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, developed on a public-private partnership model by CIDCO.
In Pune, the cabinet approved extensions for Metro Line-2 and Line-4, adding Balajinagar and Bibwewadi stations to the Swargate-Katraj corridor, with an additional Rs 683.11 crore investment. The relocation of Katraj station is also in the works, enhancing connectivity for thousands.
Additionally, the Pune-Lonavala suburban rail’s third and fourth lines got the nod, with a Rs 5,100 crore project split equally between the state and central governments. Local bodies like Pune Municipal Corporation (Rs 510 crore), Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (Rs 510 crore), and PMRDA (Rs 765 crore) will chip in, easing the load on this critical rail corridor.

Nagpur isn’t left behind, with Phase II of its metro project and an outer ring road, complete with four truck and bus terminals, set to redefine the city’s connectivity. The Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority will spearhead these developments, alongside a visionary International Business and Finance Centre in Hingna taluka, spanning 692 hectares.
Beyond transport, the cabinet approved Rs 3,750 crore for a new High Court complex in Bandra (East), Mumbai, and increased monthly aid under the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana and Shravanbal scheme to Rs 2,500 for persons with disabilities. A new fly-ash utilisation policy for Mahagenco’s thermal plants and amendments to the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act and Factories Act were also cleared.
In education, the state will adopt the Centre’s pre-matric scholarship for Scheduled Tribes students in Classes 9 and 10, replacing its own Golden Jubilee scheme.
With these approvals, Maharashtra is paving the way for a connected, inclusive, and modern urban future, tackling congestion and boosting economic growth across its key cities.
