The Tamil Nadu government has allocated ₹281 crore for precautionary and disaster-prevention measures ahead of the northeast monsoon, Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management K.A. Sengottaiyan said in Nagapattinam on Thursday. The funds will be used to strengthen preparedness and undertake various measures aimed at reducing the impact of possible weather-related emergencies during the monsoon season.
Mr. Sengottaiyan made the announcement during a review meeting in Nagapattinam, where he assessed the district’s preparedness to deal with emergencies. He directed officials at the district level to take all necessary precautionary measures and ensure that arrangements were in place to respond quickly to situations that could arise during the northeast monsoon.
The Minister emphasised the need for advance preparedness and coordinated action by various departments. District authorities were asked to identify vulnerable areas and take preventive steps so that potential risks could be addressed before the onset of severe weather. The review was aimed at ensuring that emergency response mechanisms remain ready throughout the monsoon period.

As part of the preparedness arrangements, Mr. Sengottaiyan also inspected a rubber boat kept ready for rescue operations in Nagapattinam. The Minister was accompanied by Minister for Minorities Welfare A.M. Shajahan and Minister for Fisheries A. Srinath during the inspection. The presence of officials and Ministers from departments likely to be involved in disaster response reflected the need for coordination in dealing with emergencies affecting coastal areas and communities during the monsoon.
The allocation of ₹281 crore is intended to support precautionary and disaster-prevention activities as Tamil Nadu prepares for the northeast monsoon. The State government has asked district administrations to remain vigilant and complete necessary preparations in advance, with particular emphasis on ensuring that rescue arrangements and other emergency-response resources are available to tackle any situation that may arise.
