Actor Prakash Raj has been granted bail by a Bengaluru court in a case related to alleged irregularities in voter registration during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The court's decision came after Raj appeared voluntarily before the court on Friday, allowing the legal proceedings against him to move forward. The case involves allegations that he was registered as a voter in multiple states and did not disclose the details in his election affidavit. Chief Judicial Magistrate Jyoti Shantappa Kale granted bail to Prakash Raj on July 10 after hearing submissions from both sides. As part of the bail conditions, the actor has been directed to submit a security deposit of ₹4,000 and remain present for future court hearings.
The court order came after Raj appeared before the judicial authority following developments related to the case. The case was filed over allegations linked to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when Raj contested as an independent candidate from Bengaluru Central. The complaint alleges that he had voter registrations in more than one state at the time and failed to mention the same in his election affidavit submitted to the authorities. The allegations are yet to be proven, and the matter will now proceed through the trial process. The court had earlier issued a non-bailable warrant against Raj after officials were reportedly unable to deliver court summons to him.
However, the actor appeared before the court voluntarily after becoming aware of the legal proceedings. His lawyer, Nagarjuna, informed the court that Raj had never received the warrant and had learned about the matter through media reports. During the hearing, Raj's lawyer also stated that the actor had surrendered his Tamil Nadu voter ID. The move was presented as part of his response to the allegations regarding multiple voter registrations. The defence maintained that Raj had cooperated with the legal process and requested that he be granted bail.

The lawyer representing the complainant, Dharmapal, told the court that the charges against Prakash Raj were non-cognisable offences. Such offences generally involve less serious allegations and require specific legal procedures before further action can be taken. After considering the arguments presented by both parties, the court decided to grant bail to the actor. Prakash Raj had entered electoral politics during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, contesting from Bengaluru Central as an independent candidate. He was among several public figures who stepped into politics during that election cycle.
Although he did not win the seat, his candidature attracted significant attention due to his public profile and outspoken views on political and social issues. The actor has had a long career spanning multiple Indian film industries, including Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi cinema. Apart from his acting career, Raj has frequently commented on issues related to governance, democracy and social matters, making him a prominent public voice beyond the entertainment industry.
The latest court development does not decide the merits of the allegations but only addresses Raj's immediate legal status during the proceedings. The trial will determine whether the claims made in the complaint are supported by evidence. The court is expected to hear further arguments and examine relevant documents as the case progresses. With bail granted, Prakash Raj will continue to face the legal proceedings while remaining free under the conditions imposed by the court. The case will now move ahead through the judicial process, where both the prosecution and defence will have the opportunity to present their respective arguments and evidence.
