Kerala Chief Minister-designate VD Satheesan on Friday announced that he would significantly reduce the size of his official convoy, marking one of his first major administrative decisions after being selected for the top post. Speaking to reporters after a joint meeting with religious leaders in Thiruvananthapuram, Satheesan said the state’s financial condition did not justify what he described as excessive official extravagance. He clarified that his remarks were not intended as criticism of former chief ministers, but stressed that public representatives should lead by example during financially difficult times.
Satheesan said he had instructed the police department to arrange only the minimum required security vehicles for his movement despite being entitled to Z-plus category protection as chief minister. He stated that his convoy should include as few vehicles as possible and added that he did not want ordinary people inconvenienced during his travel. According to him, public roads should not be blocked for his movement, and traffic disruptions should be kept to an absolute minimum. The Congress leader remarked that although citizens may not openly criticize leaders for lavish displays, they often privately disapprove of such behavior.
The chief minister-designate also announced that he would not purchase a new official vehicle for himself and would instead use whichever government car was already available. He said the issue was not about whether the state could afford a new vehicle, but about the message it would send to the larger administrative system. Satheesan argued that unnecessary spending by senior officials often encourages similar behavior across lower levels of governance, eventually increasing pressure on the state treasury. He added that austerity measures should begin at the highest level of leadership.

Party sources earlier in the day said Satheesan had specifically directed officials to limit his convoy to a pilot vehicle and an escort vehicle alongside his official car. The move has drawn attention because it contrasts sharply with the larger motorcades associated with previous administrations in Kerala. Former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had often faced criticism from opposition parties and sections of the public over the size of his security convoy. Political observers also noted comparisons with former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who was known for maintaining relatively simpler official travel arrangements.
During the interaction with reporters, Satheesan also spoke about communal harmony and the importance of religious unity in Kerala. Referring to his meeting with leaders from different faith communities, he said Kerala had historically stood together during times of tension and divisive campaigns. He thanked the religious leaders for extending their support and blessings and described their shared vision as one of a secular and inclusive Kerala. According to Satheesan, preserving social harmony would remain one of the key priorities of his administration.
The Congress leader further said he viewed his appointment as chief minister-designate as a “divine assignment,” a phrase he had also used shortly after the party leadership announced his selection. He credited the prayers and goodwill of the people and religious leaders for his elevation to the post. Satheesan reiterated that his government would strongly oppose communal and divisive politics and said his administration would attempt to balance governance with financial discipline, simplicity, and public accountability as Kerala prepares for a new political chapter.
