ReTuna Återbruksgalleria in Eskilstuna, Sweden, stands as the world’s first shopping mall dedicated exclusively to secondhand and repurposed items, revolutionizing retail through a municipality-led initiative. Established in 2015 as part of Eskilstuna’s climate and waste reduction strategy, ReTuna operates alongside the city’s recycling center, featuring a drop-off point called The Return where residents donate unwanted items. These are sorted and distributed to 14 shops, including fashion boutiques, sports stores, and an IKEA secondhand outlet, creating a low-cost, low-waste circular system.
Supported by public funding, the mall has generated over 50 jobs and achieved a turnover of $1.8 million annually, demonstrating that sustainability and profitability can coexist. Unlike traditional charity shops or cluttered vintage boutiques, ReTuna offers a curated, modern shopping experience with a diverse range of products, from clothing and electronics to antiques and toys. Consumers praise its “accessible” and “convenient” atmosphere, with displays mimicking conventional retail spaces.
Shoppers often mistake secondhand items for new, as noted by a store manager, highlighting how design and presentation make ethical consumption appealing. The mall also serves as an educational hub, hosting workshops, lectures, and events like toy-swapping days to promote sustainability, fostering a community-driven approach to circular living. One shopper described the experience as “not just ethical, it’s beautiful,” reflecting ReTuna’s success in challenging secondhand stigmas.
The global secondhand market is booming, projected to reach $367 billion by 2029, with the broader pre-loved goods market expected to hit $1.04 trillion by 2035, growing at a 17.2% compound annual rate. A YouGov survey indicates 43% of secondhand buyers prefer in-store purchases over online, underscoring ReTuna’s relevance as a model for future retail.
Its success has inspired similar initiatives in Norway, Australia, and beyond, positioning Eskilstuna as a global leader in sustainable consumption. By blending style, convenience, and environmental values, ReTuna proves that circular retail can transform how we shop, making sustainability an integral and rewarding part of everyday life.
