The United States is reportedly preparing to reduce the number of key military assets it contributes to NATO operations in Europe, including fighter jets, warships, and support aircraft, according to a report published on Thursday. The proposed adjustments, if implemented, would mark a notable shift in Washington’s force posture amid ongoing security tensions between NATO and Russia.

The New York Times, citing two unidentified senior European officials, reported that the United States plans to reduce the number of fighter jets assigned to NATO missions in Europe by approximately one-third. The report also claims that all eight aerial refueling tankers currently supporting operations in the region are expected to be withdrawn, along with a reduction in maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

In addition to air power reductions, the reported plan includes the possible reallocation of several high-value naval and strategic assets. These include a missile-launching submarine, an aircraft carrier, a group of bomber aircraft, and multiple additional jets and warships. While details of the timing and scope remain unclear, the reported changes suggest a broader reassessment of US military commitments in Europe.

The potential drawdown comes at a time when European NATO members are actively increasing their own defense spending and military preparedness. The reported changes also come against a backdrop of political friction over burden-sharing within the alliance. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO, describing it as a “paper tiger” and accusing some member states of failing to contribute adequately to collective defense efforts. His remarks have intensified long-standing debates over the level of American military commitment to Europe.

At present, the White House has not officially confirmed the reported reductions in NATO-related deployments. If enacted, the move could reshape the balance of conventional military power in Europe and place greater pressure on European allies to compensate for reduced US capabilities in the region. Analysts note that such a shift could also influence NATO’s strategic planning at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
