The United States has formally approved a $93 million defence package for India that includes 100 cutting-edge FGM-148 Javelin portable anti-tank missiles, 25 lightweight command launch units, and 216 M982A1 Excalibur GPS-guided 155mm artillery rounds, marking yet another milestone in the rapidly expanding US-India strategic partnership. The Defence Security Cooperation Agency delivered the mandatory notification to Congress on Wednesday, clearing the path for one of the most significant transfers of advanced firepower to New Delhi in recent years.
Beyond the headline munitions, the deal encompasses comprehensive operator training, technical assistance, lifecycle logistics support, refurbishment of launch units, security inspections, and a full suite of ancillary equipment to guarantee immediate operational readiness. Split roughly evenly between $46 million for the Javelin systems and $47 million for the Excalibur precision rounds, the package is designed to dramatically enhance India’s ability to neutralize modern armour and conduct highly accurate, long-range artillery strikes with minimal collateral damage.
The DSCA statement explicitly frames the sale as a direct contribution to American foreign policy and national security goals, emphasizing that strengthening India—a major defence partner—remains critical for maintaining political stability, peace, and economic progress across the Indo-Pacific and South Asia. Officials stressed that the transfer will not upset the existing military balance in the region and that India possesses the technical capacity to absorb these sophisticated systems without difficulty.

The shoulder-fired Javelin, co-developed by RTX Corporation and Lockheed Martin, has earned battlefield legend status for its fire-and-forget, top-attack profile that defeats even heavily armoured tanks by striking their weakest upper surfaces, a capability dramatically demonstrated in Ukraine against Russian T-90s and T-72s. Complementing this, the Excalibur rounds convert standard artillery into pinpoint-accurate weapons through integrated GPS/INS guidance, allowing Indian forces to engage high-value targets at extended ranges while sharply reducing risks to civilians and friendly troops.
With no offset agreements currently in place and Congress now entering its statutory 30-day review window, the approval underscores the accelerating momentum in US-India defence cooperation as both nations deepen collaboration to address shared security challenges along the northern borders and across the broader Indo-Pacific theatre.
