US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor declared on January 12 that no country holds greater strategic importance to the United States than India, underscoring the deepening bilateral partnership. Speaking at the US Embassy in New Delhi upon his arrival, Gor highlighted the imminent resumption of high-level trade negotiations between Washington and New Delhi, set to begin the following day. He described the India-US relationship as one anchored at the highest political levels, emphasizing that genuine friendship allows both nations to overcome differences and advance shared goals.
Gor affirmed the authenticity of President Donald Trump's longstanding friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating he had personally witnessed their rapport during travels with the President. He characterized the bond as "real" and rooted in mutual respect, adding that true allies resolve disagreements constructively. The envoy stressed that the partnership extends far beyond trade, encompassing critical domains such as defense, counter-terrorism, energy security, advanced technology, education, and public health cooperation.
Addressing the possibility of a presidential visit, Gor revealed that Trump may travel to India as early as next year. He recounted a recent conversation in which the President fondly recalled his previous trip to India and expressed enthusiasm for returning. Gor noted Trump's habit of early-morning calls, humorously suggesting the time difference with New Delhi could align favorably for direct communication between the leaders.

The ambassador-designate outlined an ambitious agenda for his tenure, aimed at elevating the bilateral relationship to unprecedented heights. He described India and the United States as the intersection of the world's oldest and largest democracies, each contributing unique strengths to a true strategic partnership. Gor reiterated that pursuing this vision requires determination, particularly given India's scale and complexity as the world's most populous nation.
In a significant announcement, Gor confirmed India's forthcoming inclusion as a full member of the US-led Pax Silica alliance next month. This initiative seeks to establish a secure, resilient, and innovation-focused global silicon supply chain. On the trade front, he acknowledged the challenges in finalizing a comprehensive deal but expressed confidence, noting that active engagement would continue with the next round of talks scheduled immediately after his remarks.
