On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Russia faces tariffs and other measures starting in 10 days unless Moscow shows progress in ending its three-year war in Ukraine. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump, who shortened his initial 50-day deadline to 10-12 days, expressed frustration over Russia’s lack of response and President Vladimir Putin’s apparent intent to continue the conflict.
Trump dismissed concerns about Russian sanctions impacting global oil markets, vowing to ramp up U.S. oil production to counter any effects. He previously threatened sanctions not only on Russia but also on nations purchasing its exports, including China, during a speech in Scotland on Monday. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed discussions with Chinese officials, warning of high tariffs if Beijing continues buying Russian oil.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, a Putin ally, called Trump’s approach a dangerous “game of ultimatums” on X, warning it could escalate to U.S. involvement in war. Trump, who campaigned on ending the Ukraine conflict in a day, has touted his role in resolving India-Pakistan and Rwanda-Congo disputes but faces challenges in Gaza. His growing impatience with Moscow signals a shift toward enforcing economic penalties.
