US President Donald Trump on Tuesday welcomed Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi to the White House, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the two countries. The meeting comes as Iraq faces challenges related to security, political stability and efforts to address the influence of Iran-backed armed groups operating within the country.
Al-Zaidi, a businessman with no previous political career, emerged as a consensus candidate after months of political deadlock following Iraq’s parliamentary elections. Trump had previously expressed support for his rise to power, describing his appointment as the beginning of a new phase of cooperation between the United States and Iraq focused on prosperity, stability and development.
The issue of Iran-backed militias is expected to be a major focus of discussions between the two leaders. Iraq has faced pressure to disarm armed groups linked to Iran, some of which have been accused of carrying out attacks against US bases and diplomatic facilities. The Iraqi government has set a deadline of the end of September for non-state armed groups to disarm, although some powerful militias have rejected the move.

A Trump administration official said the United States would assess Iraq’s actions regarding the disarmament of Iranian-backed groups before deciding on future steps. Analysts believe Washington is likely to push al-Zaidi to take stronger action, while the Iraqi leader may seek greater US support, including intelligence and security assistance, to manage potential resistance from armed factions.
The prime minister’s rise has also attracted attention because of his earlier association with Al-Janoob Islamic Bank, where he served as chairman. The bank was among Iraqi financial institutions restricted by the country’s central bank in 2024 from conducting dollar transactions amid US concerns over money laundering and the movement of funds linked to Iran.
Since taking office, al-Zaidi has attempted to project an image of a government committed to fighting corruption. His administration has carried out raids and arrests involving current and former lawmakers and officials accused of corruption, including individuals linked to former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
During his Washington visit, al-Zaidi is expected to discuss economic cooperation, investment opportunities and Iraq’s energy sector. His delegation includes Iraqi business leaders and government officials, with the prime minister’s office stating that the visit aims to expand US participation in infrastructure projects and strengthen long-term economic ties between the two nations.
