The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly exploring a short-term county cricket stint for Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi as India prepares for its upcoming Test assignment against New Zealand. The move is being considered after India's hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final became increasingly difficult, leaving the team with little margin for error in its remaining matches. Nabi was earlier named in India's squad for the Sri Lanka series as a replacement for injured fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, but he did not feature in either of the two Tests. The BCCI is now looking at ways to ensure that the young pacer gets meaningful red-ball cricket before the next major Test challenge.
According to a report, the BCCI is in discussions with a few county clubs about a short-term arrangement that could allow Nabi to play in the final stages of the County Championship. The primary objective is to give him competitive experience in English conditions, where factors such as movement through the air and assistance from the surface can provide a different challenge from domestic cricket in India. A stint in England would allow Nabi to bowl longer spells and work on his red-ball rhythm in first-class matches. The board believes such exposure could help him prepare for the demands of international Test cricket.
Nabi enters the discussion after an outstanding Ranji Trophy campaign in which he finished as the competition's leading wicket-taker with 60 wickets. His performance established him as one of India's promising domestic fast-bowling options and helped earn him a place in the national squad for the Sri Lanka series. Despite being included in the squad, however, he remained on the sidelines throughout both Tests. With India facing a demanding sequence of Tests ahead, the BCCI is understood to be keen on avoiding a prolonged period without competitive cricket for the pacer.

Surrey is reportedly among the county clubs interested in Nabi, with the London-based side understood to be looking for a bowler capable of generating movement through the air. Former England captain Alec Stewart, who holds a senior role at Surrey, is also believed to have been involved in discussions concerning a possible arrangement. If the move goes ahead, Nabi could potentially play two or three first-class matches in England before India's preparations for the New Zealand series intensify. A BCCI source indicated that although New Zealand would offer different playing conditions, red-ball matches in England would still provide useful preparation for the pacer.
The proposed county stint would also continue the growing practice of Indian players using English domestic cricket to gain experience in overseas red-ball conditions. Players such as Manav Suthar, Kuldeep Yadav and R Sai Kishore have been involved with county sides, while Ashutosh Sharma has also featured in English domestic cricket. These opportunities allow Indian players to adapt to conditions where the ball can move differently and where sustained spells of bowling are an important part of first-class cricket. For Nabi, such experience could be particularly valuable as he attempts to establish himself as a potential option for India's Test bowling attack.
The BCCI is also understood to be working on Nabi's UK visa arrangements, with the completion of the formalities potentially determining when he can travel and join a county side. India's remaining WTC schedule includes two Tests away against New Zealand and five at home against Australia, making every match important for the team's qualification prospects. Meanwhile, another young fast bowler, Gurnoor Brar, is set to pursue red-ball exposure through North Zone in the Duleep Trophy. For Nabi, a county opportunity would offer another route to first-class preparation and could strengthen his readiness if India requires additional pace options during its demanding Test schedule.
