United States President Donald Trump has announced a three-day temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, coinciding with Moscow’s Victory Day commemorations marking the end of World War II in Europe. The announcement was made through a post on Truth Social, where Trump stated that the truce would run from May 9 to May 11 and was intended to pause ongoing hostilities in the long-running conflict.
Trump said the ceasefire was agreed upon following diplomatic engagement involving both Russian and Ukrainian leadership. He added that the request for the temporary truce was made directly by him and thanked both sides for accepting the arrangement. The development comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues into its fourth year, with ongoing military operations and civilian casualties reported on both sides.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed the ceasefire agreement on social media platform X, stating that the arrangement had been reached through United States mediation efforts. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov further indicated that the agreement followed diplomatic contact between Washington, Moscow, and Kyiv, including a recent telephone discussion involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump.

According to the announcement, the temporary truce is expected to include a complete suspension of kinetic military activity during the three-day period. Trump also stated that the arrangement would involve a large-scale prisoner exchange, with approximately 1,000 prisoners to be released by each side. The ceasefire has been framed as a humanitarian and symbolic gesture aligned with Victory Day observances in Russia.
The US President noted that both Russia and Ukraine had significant historical roles during World War II, linking the ceasefire timing to the commemorations. However, he also acknowledged that the broader war remains unresolved despite earlier promises during his presidential campaign to bring a swift end to the conflict. Previous diplomatic efforts have struggled to produce lasting agreements, with fighting continuing across multiple frontlines.
While the temporary ceasefire has raised cautious optimism, analysts note that similar short-term truces in the past have not always translated into sustained peace. Both Moscow and Kyiv are expected to closely monitor compliance during the three-day period, as international observers watch whether the pause in fighting could open the door to further negotiations or remain a symbolic gesture amid ongoing tensions.
