Thai police have arrested a 46-year-old Australian man in connection with the alleged abduction and killing of a 17-year-old Thai girl whose body was found inside a suitcase, authorities said on Saturday. The suspect, who denies any involvement in the teenager's disappearance and death, was taken into custody following an interrogation after investigators tracked his movements. Police said the investigation remains ongoing, with forensic examinations and additional evidence expected to determine the charges that will ultimately be filed.
According to a police official in the resort city of Pattaya, investigators are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination and the analysis of other evidence before proceeding with formal charges. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation, said the potential charges could include child abduction, murder, concealing a corpse and the abduction of a minor for sexual purposes. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the circumstances surrounding the teenager's death, citing the ongoing investigation.
Media reports said the Australian national was arrested on Friday at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport while allegedly attempting to purchase a ticket for a flight to Perth, Australia. Police reportedly intercepted the suspect before he could leave the country, following an investigation that linked him to the victim's final known movements. Officials have not confirmed whether the man had completed immigration procedures before his arrest, but said he remains in custody as detectives continue to gather evidence.

Investigators are relying heavily on surveillance footage collected from the area where the teenager was last seen. According to local media reports, closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the suspect entering a condominium in Pattaya with the 17-year-old during the early hours of Thursday. Authorities are reviewing additional security camera footage from nearby locations and interviewing witnesses to establish a detailed timeline of events leading up to the discovery of the body. Police have not yet disclosed where or under what circumstances the suitcase containing the victim's body was found.
The case has attracted widespread attention in Thailand and Australia because of the nature of the alleged crime and the involvement of a foreign national. Thai authorities have emphasised that the investigation is being conducted in accordance with legal procedures and that forensic evidence will play a crucial role in determining the sequence of events. Officials have also urged the public to avoid speculation while investigators continue their work, noting that the suspect has denied any role in the alleged offences.
If charged, the Australian man would face prosecution under Thai law, which provides severe penalties for offences including murder and crimes involving minors. Police have indicated that further announcements will be made once forensic findings and other investigative results are available. The investigation remains active as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the teenager's death and determine whether additional individuals may have been involved in the case.
