The Union Public Service Commission conducted the Civil Services Preliminary Examination (CSE) 2026 on Sunday, with more than eight lakh candidates appearing for the highly competitive test across the country. Aspirants and experts described the General Studies (GS) Paper 1 as lengthy and analytical, with many noting a noticeable shift in the examination pattern compared to previous years.
Several candidates said the paper demanded stronger analytical ability and time management skills rather than direct factual recall. Anchal Tripathi, one of the aspirants who appeared for the examination, described the paper as “unusually lengthy” but manageable with sufficient practice. She said she attempted around 78 questions during the examination.
Another candidate, Saurabh Kumar, said preparation based on previous years’ question papers remained useful, though the 2026 paper appeared to reduce the direct advantage traditionally gained from repeated patterns. Experts analyzing the exam also observed that the UPSC appeared to place greater emphasis on conceptual understanding and application-based questions rather than straightforward memorization.

The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) Paper 2 was also conducted on the same day. Coaching institutes and subject experts noted that the overall difficulty level of the prelims reflected UPSC’s evolving approach towards testing analytical reasoning, comprehension, and interdisciplinary understanding. Many candidates reportedly found time management to be one of the biggest challenges during GS Paper 1 because of the length and framing of questions.
The UPSC Civil Services Examination is considered one of India’s toughest competitive exams and serves as the gateway to prestigious services such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS). Following the prelims, shortlisted candidates will move on to the mains examination and personality test stages later in the selection process.
