Former model-turned-actor Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old woman from Noida, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. Her family has accused her in-laws of subjecting her to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. The case has drawn significant attention due to the high-profile background of the accused, including a former district judge. A second postmortem was conducted by a team of doctors from AIIMS Delhi before her body was released for last rites.
Twisha’s cremation took place on Sunday at the Bhadbhada Vishram Ghat in Bhopal after 5 pm, twelve days after her death. The funeral saw her mother and other family members grieving openly as rituals were performed. Her father, Navnidhi Sharma, expressed profound sorrow while speaking to PTI earlier in the day. “Today, we are going to bid farewell to a daughter, a sister, a friend and an innocent life. The daughter who had begun a new phase of life with dreams has left us all too soon,” he said, highlighting the family’s pain and their wait for justice.
The incident has sparked serious allegations of dowry-related harassment against Twisha’s husband Samarth Singh, a lawyer, and her mother-in-law Giribala Singh, a former district judge. While the family firmly claims persistent harassment over dowry demands led to her death, the in-laws have countered by alleging that Twisha suffered from drug addiction. These conflicting narratives have complicated the investigation as authorities examine evidence from both sides.

Police have registered an FIR against Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh under relevant sections for dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. Samarth Singh, who had been absconding for ten days, was arrested in Jabalpur on Friday. A Bhopal court remanded him to seven days of police custody on Saturday to facilitate further questioning and evidence collection in the sensitive case.
The tragic death of Twisha Sharma has once again brought the issue of dowry harassment and safety of married women into focus in Madhya Pradesh. Her family continues to seek swift and transparent justice, hoping the investigation will reveal the truth behind the circumstances of her untimely demise. As the police proceed with the probe, the case is being closely monitored by women’s rights groups and the public.
