A dramatic storm has halted the Global Sumud Flotilla, a bold convoy of 20 boats carrying activists from 44 countries, including Greta Thunberg and former Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau, forcing it back to Barcelona’s port just hours after its celebrated departure. The flotilla, the largest ever to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza, prioritised safety as winds exceeding 56 km/h threatened smaller vessels.
The mission launched Sunday with thousands of pro-Palestinian supporters cheering under Barcelona’s blazing sun. Aimed at delivering aid to Gaza City, where famine grips half a million people amid Israel’s intensified offensive, the flotilla’s delay has sparked uncertainty. Spain’s weather agency, AEMET, issued warnings for heavy rain and storms across Catalonia, complicating plans.
With additional boats expected from Tunis and Sicily, the convoy’s next departure remains unclear. High-profile supporters like Susan Sarandon and Liam Cunningham of “Game of Thrones” fame have rallied behind the cause, amplifying its global attention. However, Israel’s military is likely to intercept the flotilla, as it has with past attempts.

The ongoing 23-month conflict has claimed over 63,000 lives, with 340 Palestinians, including 124 children, succumbing to malnutrition, per Gaza’s Health Ministry. As hunger worsens, the flotilla’s mission remains critical.
