The victim, a woman in her 50s identified as Ms. A, fell prey to an impersonator who convincingly posed as the beloved actor. This incident highlights the growing threat of celebrity impersonation scams, where fraudsters manipulate fans’ devotion for financial gain.

The scammer initiated contact by claiming to be Lee Jung-Jae, asserting that he personally engages with fans. To overcome Ms. A’s initial skepticism, the perpetrator employed advanced tactics, including AI-generated images of the actor and manipulated photos supposedly taken on the set of Squid Game Season 3, accompanied by falsified airport pictures. A forged identification card further bolstered the illusion, allowing the fraudster to build a false sense of authenticity and trust.

As the deception progressed, the impersonator cultivated a personal connection with Ms. A, using affectionate terms like “darling” and “honey” to deepen her emotional investment. Operating within a larger Cambodian crime syndicate, the scammer eventually manipulated the victim into transferring substantial sums of money. This calculated exploitation underscores how fraudsters leverage psychological tactics to exploit vulnerabilities, particularly among ardent fans.

The Miryang Police in Gyeongnam Province, South Korea, are investigating the case, linking the scam to an international criminal network based in Cambodia.
