ItsRainingRaincoats (IRR), a Singapore charity, raised SGD 72,000 (approximately USD 53,800) in just three days for seven Indian migrant workers who heroically rescued a female driver from a sinkhole on Tanjong Katong Road South on July 26, 2025. Led by 47-year-old foreman Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah, the workers—Velmurugan Muthusamy, 27; Poomalai Saravanan, 28; Ganesan Veerasekar, 32; Bose Ajithkumar, 26; Narayanasamy Mayakrishnan, 25; and Sathapillai Rajendran, 56—used a nylon rope to pull Chia Hui Chyi, 38, to safety within 2–3 minutes after her black Mazda plunged into a 3-meter-deep sinkhole near a PUB worksite.
The IRR campaign, launched on Giving.sg on July 28, initially aimed for SGD 50,000 for five workers but increased the target to SGD 70,000 upon confirming seven were involved. Over 1,600 donors contributed, with the charity closing the fundraiser on Wednesday, stating, “Thank you Singapore for your overwhelming kindness!” Founder Dipa Swaminathan told PTI that a formal event will soon distribute the funds, emphasizing, “These men are the backbone of our nation; their bravery deserves dignity.” IRR ensured the workers’ consent before launching the campaign and plans a meet-and-greet with the public.
Minister of State for Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash presented each worker with a Ministry of Manpower ACE coin, commending their “decisiveness and bravery.” The sinkhole, linked to a failed caisson ring at a PUB sewerage project, disrupted water mains, but repairs are underway, with Tanjong Katong Road South closed until further notice.
