In a dramatic turn of events, Yemeni authorities have postponed the execution of Nimisha Priya, a 38-year-old nurse from Kerala, India, originally scheduled for July 16, 2025, according to government sources cited by news agencies PTI and ANI. The Indian government, actively engaged in the case, has been working tirelessly to secure more time for Priya’s family to negotiate a resolution with the affected party. Indian officials have maintained close communication with Yemeni jail authorities and the prosecutor’s office, leading to this critical postponement.
This development follows a sobering statement from the Indian government to the Supreme Court on July 14, 2025, where the counsel admitted, “There is a point till which the Government of India can go. We have reached that.” Despite the challenges, diplomatic efforts have yielded this temporary reprieve.
Nimisha Priya, hailing from Kollengode in Kerala’s Palakkad district, was sentenced to death in Yemen in 2020 for the alleged murder of a Yemeni national in 2017. Priya, who moved to Yemen in 2011 to work as a nurse, stayed in Sana’a after her husband and daughter returned to India. She partnered with a Yemeni national, Talal Abdo Mahdi, to establish a clinic. Priya later alleged that Mahdi forged documents to falsely claim a marriage with her, subjecting her to physical, emotional, and financial abuse. She claimed Mahdi withheld her passports and drugged her, allegations that surfaced during her trial.
