A massive dust storm swept across Gurugram on Tuesday before moving into parts of Delhi and Noida, disrupting normal life and reducing visibility across several areas of the National Capital Region (NCR). In response to the rapidly changing weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for parts of Delhi-NCR, warning of thunderstorms, rainfall and strong winds.
The IMD forecast dust storms followed by thunderstorms accompanied by light rain, lightning and gusty winds over Delhi and surrounding NCR regions. Authorities urged residents to remain cautious as strong winds and poor visibility posed risks to commuters and those outdoors. The weather system was expected to affect multiple districts across the region during the afternoon hours.
Videos circulating on social media showed thick clouds of dust engulfing roads, buildings and open spaces in Gurugram. Strong winds swept through the city, causing visibility to drop sharply and making travel difficult in several locations. Similar conditions were later reported from parts of Delhi and Noida as the storm system moved eastward.

Weather observers indicated that a brief spell of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms was likely across several parts of Delhi-NCR between 3 pm and 4:30 pm. The anticipated rain was expected to provide temporary relief from the dusty conditions and help lower temperatures after a period of hot and dry weather in the region.
Meteorologists noted that such dust storms are common during seasonal transitions in north India, particularly when strong winds interact with dry surface conditions. While the accompanying rainfall can improve air quality by settling suspended dust particles, sudden storms often lead to traffic disruptions, flight delays and temporary power outages in affected areas.
The IMD said weather conditions were expected to gradually improve later in the evening, with the system weakening after passing through the region. However, authorities continued to monitor developments closely and advised residents to follow weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during severe conditions and take precautions against lightning and strong winds.
