The body of 22-year-old Ajit Singh Chaudhary, a promising MBBS student from Rajasthan's Alwar district, was recovered from a dam near the White River in Russia's Ufa city on Thursday—19 agonizing days after he vanished during a routine errand. Hailing from Kaphanwada village in Lakshmangarh, Ajit had enrolled at Bashkir State Medical University in 2023, chasing his dream of becoming a doctor with his family's hard-earned savings, including the sale of three bigha of ancestral land to fund his overseas education.
Ajit stepped out of his hostel around 11 a.m. on October 19, casually telling friends he was off to buy milk, but he never returned, sparking a frantic search that gripped his family and the Indian student community in Ufa. The next day, his clothes, mobile phone, and shoes were discovered eerily abandoned on the swollen riverbank, suggesting he may have been swept away by sudden currents from seasonal rains that had turned the waterway treacherous. Fellow students at the university identified his remains, confirming the worst after weeks of desperate pleas and official interventions.
The Indian Embassy in Moscow swiftly notified Ajit's devastated family, coordinating with Rajasthan officials, though no official statement has been released yet. Former Union Minister Jitendra Singh Alwar voiced profound grief on X, labeling the circumstances "suspicious" and alleging an "untoward incident" befell the bright young man whose family had pooled every resource for his future. "This is a heartbreaking moment for Alwar—we've lost a promising boy in unclear shadows," he posted, urging External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to expedite body repatriation and launch a thorough probe to uncover the truth behind the baffling disappearance.

The All India Medical Students' Association (AIMSA) echoed the call, penning a letter to Jaishankar and Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma, pleading for urgent embassy assistance in bringing Ajit's remains home and ensuring justice. "In this hour of profound loss, we seek your intervention to coordinate with Russian authorities," AIMSA's foreign wing wrote, as Ajit's friends mourned a peer described as diligent and full of life, now silenced by the river's cruel depths. The university remains tight-lipped, leaving more questions than answers in this overseas nightmare.
As Ajit's family reels from the unimaginable blow—having prayed daily for his safe return—this case spotlights the perils Indian students face abroad, from isolation to unexplained hazards, demanding not just condolences but systemic safeguards and swift accountability. With repatriation underway, the focus shifts to unraveling the mystery: accident or something darker? For now, a village in Rajasthan weeps for the doctor it will never see.
