Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday acknowledged the role of former US President Donald Trump in advancing India–US relations, saying he wanted to “thank President Trump for his personal commitment” to strengthening ties between the two countries. Modi’s remarks came amid renewed discussion on trade and strategic cooperation between New Delhi and Washington.
Speaking at an official event, the Prime Minister said sustained leadership-level engagement had played a key role in deepening bilateral cooperation. He noted that India and the United States had made significant progress in areas such as trade, defence, energy, and technology due to consistent dialogue and mutual trust built over the years.
Modi highlighted that during Trump’s presidency, both countries worked to enhance economic engagement and reduce long-standing trade frictions. He said the momentum generated during that period helped lay the groundwork for closer collaboration, benefiting businesses, investors, and citizens on both sides.

The Prime Minister also underscored that India–US relations enjoy broad bipartisan support in the United States and remain a pillar of India’s foreign policy. He said successive governments in both countries have recognised the strategic importance of the partnership in addressing global challenges, including supply chain resilience, security, and innovation.
Analysts note that Modi’s comments reflect India’s emphasis on continuity in foreign relations, regardless of political changes in partner countries. The India–US relationship has expanded steadily over the past decade, driven by shared economic interests and converging geopolitical priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.
India and the United States continue to engage through multiple high-level mechanisms, with officials from both sides expressing optimism about further expanding trade and strategic cooperation. The Prime Minister said India remains committed to working closely with the US leadership to advance shared goals and strengthen the comprehensive global strategic partnership.
