Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated Janez Janša on his election as the Prime Minister of Slovenia and expressed India’s readiness to work closely with the new leadership to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, according to an official statement shared on social media.
In his message on X, PM Modi extended “heartiest congratulations” to Janez Janša and said he looked forward to collaborating with him for the shared prosperity and mutual benefit of the people of India and Slovenia. The message reflects India’s continued emphasis on expanding diplomatic engagement with European partners through stronger political and economic ties.
Janez Janša was appointed as Slovenia’s Prime Minister on May 22 following a secret ballot in the country’s National Assembly. According to reports, he secured 51 votes in the 90-seat parliament. His appointment marks his fourth term as prime minister, despite his party, the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS), narrowly missing a decisive win in the recent elections held in March.

India and Slovenia have in recent years expanded cooperation across key sectors including trade, technology, and tourism. Officials from both sides have held multiple rounds of discussions aimed at strengthening economic engagement and improving bilateral investment flows. These engagements have also focused on enhancing collaboration in areas such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, agriculture, energy, and traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda.
The two countries also held the 10th session of the India–Slovenia Joint Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation in New Delhi last year. During these discussions, both sides reviewed global economic developments and explored ways to deepen commercial ties, including efforts toward a balanced India–EU Free Trade Agreement. Officials described the partnership as steadily growing, with bilateral trade showing a consistent upward trend in recent years.
India has signalled that it sees Slovenia as an important partner within the European Union framework, particularly in promoting trade diversification and technological cooperation. The latest congratulatory message from the Prime Minister underscores New Delhi’s intent to maintain continuity in diplomatic outreach while building on existing areas of collaboration.
