Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged citizens to actively participate in democratic processes, stating that being a voter is not only a constitutional right but also the greatest privilege and responsibility in a democracy. His message was delivered on the occasion of National Voters’ Day, observed annually on January 25 to mark the foundation of the Election Commission of India.
In a letter addressed to MY-Bharat volunteers, the prime minister emphasised the central role voters play in shaping the nation’s future. He described voters as the “bhagya vidhata”, or deciders of India’s development journey, underscoring that every vote contributes to the direction and destiny of the country.
“To be a voter is the greatest privilege and responsibility in a democracy. Voting is a sacred constitutional right and a mark of participation in Bharat’s future,” Modi said in his message. He highlighted that democratic participation strengthens institutions and ensures that governance remains accountable to the people.

The Prime Minister also made a special appeal to young citizens, urging them to celebrate the moment when they or someone close to them becomes a voter for the first time. He said first-time voters represent the aspirations of a new generation and play a crucial role in keeping India’s democracy vibrant and forward-looking.
National Voters’ Day is observed across the country with awareness programmes, enrolment drives, and outreach activities aimed at encouraging greater voter participation, particularly among youth and first-time voters. The Election Commission of India marks the day to reinforce the importance of free, fair, and inclusive elections.
PM Modi’s remarks come amid continued efforts by the government and election authorities to increase voter awareness and turnout, especially among young citizens. The message reinforces the idea that active civic engagement is essential for sustaining democratic values and ensuring inclusive national development.
