Asaduddin Owaisi, President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad Muslimeen (AIMIM), sharply criticized the Indian government for signing a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) with Israel, accusing the latter of “overseeing genocide, ethnic cleansing, and famine” in Gaza. In a statement posted on X, Owaisi argued that supporting what he described as a “genocidal government” is contrary to India’s national interest.
The agreement, signed on September 8, 2025, by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and an Israeli minister, aims to promote and protect mutual investments between the two nations, according to India’s finance ministry.
Owaisi highlighted a media report featuring the signing ceremony, pointing out that the Israeli minister involved has publicly justified actions in Gaza, including policies allegedly leading to starvation, and faces potential arrest warrant applications at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
While Owaisi did not name the minister, he condemned the Modi government’s decision to proceed with the treaty during a time of heightened conflict and humanitarian concerns in Gaza, calling it “despicable.”
The AIMIM leader’s remarks have sparked debate over India’s diplomatic and economic engagements with Israel, particularly in light of the ongoing Gaza crisis. Owaisi’s critique underscores the tension between India’s strategic partnerships and the ethical considerations raised by the conflict, urging a reevaluation of the agreement to align with broader humanitarian values.
