Prime Minister Narendra Modi has penned a letter to NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who is set to return to Earth early Wednesday after a nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), extending an invitation to visit India. The letter, dated March 1 and delivered via former astronaut Mike Massimino, was shared on X by Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh.
“Even though you are thousands of miles away, you continue to remain close to our hearts. The people of India are praying for your good health and success in your mission,” Modi wrote, adding, “After your return, we are looking forward to seeing you in India. It will be a pleasure for India to host one of its most illustrious daughters.” Williams, 59, of Indian descent through her late father Deepak Pandya, endured an extended stay due to Boeing Starliner issues, returning via SpaceX with Butch Wilmore.
Modi reminisced about meeting Williams and her father in 2016 during a U.S. visit and noted a recent chat with Massimino in New Delhi that prompted the letter. “During the course of our conversation, your name came up and we discussed how proud we are of you and your work,” he said. He also mentioned raising her wellbeing with Presidents Trump and Biden during U.S. trips, reflecting, “1.4 billion Indians have always taken great pride in your achievements.”
Praising her “inspirational fortitude,” Modi extended regards to her husband Michael and mother Bonnie Pandya, suggesting Deepak’s blessings accompany her. Williams, who set a female record with 62 spacewalking hours, is expected to splash down off Florida, concluding a mission that captivated India and beyond. Modi’s gesture underscores her cultural ties and India’s admiration for her stellar career.
