A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula triggered tsunami warnings across Hawaii, Japan, and the U.S. West Coast, causing widespread panic and evacuation efforts. In Maui, allegations surfaced that Oprah Winfrey refused to open her private road connecting Wailea to Kula, potentially hindering residents' escape to higher ground. Social media erupted with criticism, with one X user stating, “Oprah won’t open her private road, causing massive traffic jams in Maui as thousands flee the tsunami.” Another questioned her privilege, saying, “How does she have a private road while claiming oppression?”
The controversy intensified as videos circulated online, accusing the media mogul of blocking access during the crisis. However, Oprah’s spokesperson swiftly denied these claims, telling Mirror US, “As soon as we heard the tsunami warnings, we contacted local law enforcement and FEMA to ensure the road was opened. Any reports otherwise are false.” They confirmed police are managing traffic, allowing 50 cars at a time to ensure safety, and the road will remain open as needed.
This isn’t the first time Oprah’s private road has made headlines. During the 2023 Maui wildfires, she was praised for opening it to aid evacuations. With nearly 1,000 acres of property in Maui, per realtor.com, her land holdings have drawn scrutiny. Defenders on X noted, “She opened the road during the fires. Why wouldn’t she now?” As tsunami warnings are downgraded in some areas, the debate over Oprah’s actions continues to divide opinions online.
