Firefighters in Oakland, California, rescued a pigeon suffering from suspected smoke inhalation after a vehicle caught fire, with the unusual act of compassion drawing widespread appreciation on social media. The incident occurred on July 14, when members of the Oakland Fire Department's Engine 29 crew noticed the distressed bird near the scene of the car fire. According to the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 55, the pigeon appeared to approach the firefighters seeking help after being exposed to heavy smoke.

The firefighters responded by administering oxygen to the bird using an oxygen mask typically carried for emergency response operations. The crew believed the pigeon had inhaled smoke from the burning vehicle and required immediate assistance. The footage showed a firefighter in full protective gear kneeling beside the pigeon while carefully holding an oxygen mask close to its beak.
