North Korea has appointed new ambassadors to several key countries, including the United Kingdom and Indonesia, in what appears to be one of its most significant diplomatic reshuffles in nearly a decade. The changes, announced by the country’s foreign ministry on Tuesday, also include new postings to Belarus, reflecting Pyongyang’s efforts to recalibrate its international engagements.
Mun Myong-sin has been named as the new ambassador to Britain, replacing Choe Il. According to reports, this marks the first major personnel change in North Korea’s London diplomatic mission in around 10 years. Mun is known to have previously served at the North Korean Embassy in London, where he worked alongside former diplomat Tae Yong-ho, who later defected to South Korea.
In another key appointment, Hong Kwang-Il has been designated as North Korea’s ambassador to Indonesia. He will also serve as the country’s envoy to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This is the first formal confirmation of a top diplomatic appointment to Indonesia from Pyongyang since 2015, highlighting renewed attention to Southeast Asian diplomatic ties.

Separately, North Korea has already assigned a new ambassador to Belarus earlier this month. Ji Kyong-su, a former vice minister of external economic relations, presented his credentials to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on April 12. During the ceremony, he conveyed greetings from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, underscoring the continuation of high-level diplomatic communication between the two countries.
The diplomatic reshuffle comes shortly after Lukashenko’s visit to Pyongyang in March, during which both sides signed a treaty on friendship and cooperation. The agreement is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, reflecting a growing alignment between the two nations.
Analysts note that North Korea and Belarus have been drawing closer in recent years, particularly as both countries maintain supportive positions toward Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. Belarus has also indicated plans to open an embassy in Pyongyang, signalling further deepening of ties. In addition to these appointments, North Korea has recently named new ambassadors to countries such as Nigeria and Brazil, suggesting a broader attempt to revive and expand its diplomatic outreach despite long-standing international sanctions and isolation.
