US President Donald Trump on Friday highlighted major upgrades to a Boeing 747 aircraft being prepared for future use as Air Force One, describing it as a significant transformation of an already advanced platform into a highly connected presidential aircraft equipped with cutting-edge communications systems. Speaking to US Air Force personnel, Trump said the aircraft had been extensively modified with what he described as some of the most advanced communication technologies currently available.
He emphasised that the objective of the upgrade was to ensure uninterrupted, secure communication capabilities for the US president during global travel. “This plane is the first successful example of a real transformation of something that was built at the highest level and now had to be changed a little bit,” Trump said, referring to the modifications made to the aircraft. He added that the upgraded systems represented a major leap in onboard communication capacity compared to existing presidential aircraft.
Trump further claimed that the aircraft now includes communication equipment that is “the highest level,” adding that it incorporates multiple redundant systems. “We have communication equipment up there that nobody’s ever seen before. It’s the highest level, including Starlink,” he said, underscoring the emphasis on connectivity and resilience in the aircraft’s design.

He also noted that the aircraft is fitted with multiple backup communication systems intended to ensure constant connectivity under all conditions. “We have four or five different sets of double and triple communications,” Trump said, highlighting what he described as layered redundancy for secure operations during flights. During his remarks, Trump referenced billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk in connection with the integration of Starlink technology, saying, “My friend Elon is going to be very happy.”
Starlink, operated by SpaceX, is a satellite-based internet service designed to provide high-speed global connectivity. Starlink’s inclusion in the aircraft is expected to enable reliable internet access, support video conferencing, and allow fast data transfers while airborne. The system is designed to maintain stable connectivity even in remote regions, which is considered critical for secure government communications. The upgraded Boeing 747 is being developed as part of a broader effort to replace and modernise the current Air Force One fleet.
Officials have indicated that the new platform is intended to significantly enhance communication security, operational flexibility and global reach for presidential travel. The presentation at Joint Base Andrews offered one of the most detailed public glimpses yet into the modified aircraft, with Trump positioning it as a major advancement in airborne communication technology and a key step in modernising the presidential aviation system.
