A United States Navy F-35B Lightning II fighter jet crashed near Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore in central California on Wednesday evening, prompting an immediate response from base authorities. The incident occurred around 6:30 PM local time, approximately 64 kilometers southwest of Fresno. The pilot, assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron VF-125, known as the “Rough Raiders,” ejected safely and was reported uninjured, according to a statement from NAS Lemoore.
The F-35B, a cutting-edge multirole stealth fighter valued at over $100 million, is part of the Navy’s advanced fleet used for both training and operational missions. VF-125, a Fleet Replacement Squadron, specializes in training pilots and aircrew for the Navy’s F-35 program, preparing them for deployment across various carrier strike groups. The crash site, located in a remote area near the base, was quickly secured by military personnel to ensure safety and preserve evidence for the ongoing investigation.
NAS Lemoore, a key hub for Navy aviation on the West Coast, houses multiple squadrons and serves as a critical training ground for pilots operating advanced aircraft like the F-35. The base’s emergency response teams were dispatched promptly, and no additional personnel or civilians were affected by the incident, officials confirmed.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with Navy officials declining to speculate on potential factors until a thorough review is completed. “The safety of our personnel is our top priority, and we are grateful the pilot is unharmed,” the NAS Lemoore statement read. The investigation will likely involve experts from the Navy’s Safety Center and Lockheed Martin, the F-35’s manufacturer, to determine whether mechanical failure, human error, or environmental factors played a role.
This incident marks another challenge for the F-35 program, which has faced scrutiny over its high costs and occasional technical issues since its introduction. Despite these concerns, the F-35 remains a cornerstone of U.S. military aviation, known for its advanced stealth capabilities, sensor fusion, and versatility in air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.
Local residents near NAS Lemoore reported hearing a loud noise around the time of the crash but noted no immediate disruptions in the area. The Navy has assured the public that all necessary precautions are being taken to address the incident and prevent future occurrences.
As the investigation unfolds, the Navy is expected to provide updates on the cause of the crash and any implications for the F-35 program. For now, the safe recovery of the pilot offers a silver lining amid the loss of a high-value aircraft.
