A violent confrontation erupted in Sawai Madhopur’s Chauth Ka Barwara area when illegal sand miners set ablaze the vehicle of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Labhuram Vishnoi during a raid on Thursday night.
Acting on reports of illegal sand mining along the Banas River, police attempted to intervene, only to face stone-pelting and aggression from the mining mafia, officials said.
In the ensuing chaos, a tractor-trolley driver, Surgyan Meena from Bundi, died, escalating tensions.

Station House Officer Suman Kumar confirmed the death, while Surgyan’s brother, Ramprasad Meena, alleged DSP Vishnoi struck Surgyan with an iron rod, causing his immediate death. Ramprasad further claimed police failed to notify the family, discreetly sending the body to Sawai Madhopur’s mortuary.
Outraged villagers accused police of misconduct, gathering outside Chauth Ka Barwara police station on Friday to demand action against the DSP. They threatened major protests if justice is denied.
Superintendent of Police Mamta Gupta vowed strict action against the guilty, noting the absence of Mining Department officials during the raid raised procedural concerns.
Police have filed an attempt-to-murder case against the mafia, and investigations continue amid a tense atmosphere.
The incident underscores Rajasthan’s ongoing struggle with illegal sand mining, which has fueled mafia activities and law enforcement challenges.
