Over 100 Iranians, including diplomats and embassy staff, were evacuated from Beirut overnight on a Russian aircraft, a Lebanese official confirmed to AFP on Sunday. The plane departed late Saturday and transported a total of 117 Iranian nationals to safety amid rising tensions in the region. The official, who requested anonymity, said the evacuation was coordinated swiftly to ensure the security of those on board.
The evacuation follows Lebanon’s government announcement on Thursday, which banned any activities by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a key supporter of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. The move has escalated political tensions in the country, prompting Iran to secure the safe exit of its personnel from Beirut. Embassy staff and other diplomats were reportedly among the evacuees.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for launching missiles targeting Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv and Beersheva, as well as the Al-Azraq airbase in Jordan. The statement, broadcast on state television, referred to the strike as the 28th wave of “Operation Honest Promise 4", executed using next-generation missile technology from the Guards’ aerospace force.

The missile launches mark a significant escalation in regional hostilities, following weeks of tensions between Israel and Iran-backed groups in Lebanon. Officials in the region have warned of potential retaliation and further military activity as both sides monitor developments closely. The situation has heightened concerns about civilian safety and stability across the affected areas.
Separately, Iran is reportedly in the process of selecting its new supreme leader, according to AFP sources. The decision has been finalised by the relevant governing body, but the name of the successor has not yet been publicly announced. Analysts note that this leadership transition could have far-reaching implications for Iran’s domestic and foreign policy, especially amid ongoing military operations.
International observers continue to monitor the situation, with calls for de-escalation and diplomatic engagement from global powers. The evacuation of Iranian personnel from Beirut and the missile strikes underscore the rapidly evolving security landscape in the Middle East, raising concerns about broader regional conflict and humanitarian consequences.
