Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a significant global outage, disrupting numerous cloud-dependent platforms and affecting nearly half of the internet's functionality. The outage impacted services such as Amazon Prime Video, Canva, Perplexity AI, Snapchat, Venmo, Roblox, Duolingo, and others, with Downdetector reporting over 2,000 incidents in the United States alone. Amazon's own ecosystem, including Amazon.com, Alexa, and Ring, also faced connectivity issues.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk seized the opportunity to critique Amazon, reposting a statement from the AWS CEO claiming that 75% of Amazon's production code is AI-generated. Musk's sarcastic remark, "You don't say," shared on X, suggested a link between the outage and Amazon's heavy reliance on AI-driven code. This sentiment was echoed by users who speculated that Musk's earlier distrust of the Signal messaging app, which was also affected by the outage, stemmed from its dependence on AWS infrastructure. Signal’s President, Meredith Whittaker, confirmed the platform’s disruption on X.
The outage affected a broad range of digital services, including The New York Times, Coinbase, Fortnite, and McDonald’s App, among others. AWS later stated that the “operational issue” affecting multiple services had been “fully mitigated,” with recovery efforts focused on restoring full functionality. AWS, a leading provider of on-demand computing power and data storage, competes with Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, and disruptions to its infrastructure can have widespread consequences for businesses, governments, and individuals worldwide.
