Imtiaz Ali’s latest film Main Vaapas Aaunga has recorded a strong upward trend at the Indian box office, showing significant growth on its first Sunday and taking its three-day domestic net total to approximately ₹5.50 crore. The film, which stars Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari, opened to steady numbers before gaining momentum over the weekend, reflecting improving audience turnout across theatres.
The film began its theatrical run with ₹1.15 crore on Friday, followed by an increase to ₹1.85 crore on Saturday. The positive trajectory continued into Sunday, when the film collected around ₹2.50 crore, according to industry tracking reports. This steady rise over the opening weekend indicates growing word-of-mouth response, which has contributed to higher footfall in cinemas nationwide.
Occupancy data for Sunday showed an overall footfall of 29.65%, with afternoon screenings recording the strongest response at 35.23%. Trade analysts suggest that the upward trend could help stabilise the film’s performance in the coming weekdays if audience interest continues to build beyond the opening weekend.

The film has also received notable appreciation from members of the film industry. Filmmakers Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, and Anubhav Sinha publicly praised the project on social media. Their comments highlighted the film’s emotional depth, storytelling approach, and strong directorial vision, with particular praise directed towards its cinematic treatment of a sensitive historical backdrop.
Main Vaapas Aaunga also marks a continued collaboration between Imtiaz Ali and actor Diljit Dosanjh, following their earlier work on Amar Singh Chamkila in 2024. The project further reunites Ali with composer A.R. Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil, a team known for delivering critically acclaimed soundtracks in films such as Rockstar, Tamasha, and Highway.
Blending a partition-era narrative with a romantic storyline, the film explores themes of displacement, identity, and generational trauma. With its improving box office performance and strong creative backing, Main Vaapas Aaunga is positioning itself as a notable weekend performer in the current theatrical landscape.
