Mahayuti legislators from the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP gathered at Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai on Monday to celebrate the UNESCO World Heritage listing of 12 Maratha-era forts, including those tied to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The event, held before the ongoing monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature, saw lawmakers waving banners and chanting slogans in honor of the global recognition.
The ‘Maratha Military Landscapes,’ encompassing 11 forts in Maharashtra—Salher, Shivneri, Lohgad, Khanderi, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala, Vijay Durg, and Sindhudurg—alongside Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu, were inscribed on the UNESCO list during the 47th World Heritage Committee session in Paris last week. This recognition highlights the strategic brilliance of Maratha fortification systems.
Legislators hailed the inclusion as a tribute to Shivaji Maharaj’s enduring legacy, emphasizing that it will boost historical awareness and ensure the preservation of these iconic sites for future generations.
