A shocking incident at the Akashvani MLA hostel in Mumbai has ignited controversy after Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad was caught on video slapping a canteen worker on Tuesday night. The altercation, stemming from complaints about stale food, has gone viral on social media, prompting widespread criticism.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the act in the legislative council, calling it a “serious issue” that tarnishes the image of the state legislature. “Such conduct sends a wrong message that legislators misuse power,” Fadnavis said, urging council chairman Ram Shinde and Speaker Rahul Narwekar to investigate and take action. He emphasized that formal complaints, not violence, are the appropriate response to issues like poor food quality.
The issue was raised by Shiv Sena (UBT) legislator Anil Parab, who accused Gaikwad of being “high on power” and claimed the incident damages the reputation of both the legislature and the CM. In the viral video, Gaikwad is seen berating the canteen operator, refusing to pay the bill, and striking a staff member at the billing counter.

Defending his actions, the Buldhana MLA argued that the canteen’s substandard food justified his reaction, vowing to raise the issue in the ongoing legislative session. However, Fadnavis stressed that assault by public representatives is unacceptable and called for accountability.
The incident has sparked a broader debate about the conduct of elected officials and the need for stricter oversight at MLA accommodations. As public outrage grows, all eyes are on the legislative leadership to address this breach of decorum.
