Iran has issued a fresh warning that it could block the strategically critical Bab al-Mandeb Strait if the United States and Israel escalate military actions against Iranian territory, including key islands such as Kharg Island. The threat signals a widening of the ongoing conflict, raising concerns about further disruption to global trade and energy supplies.
The Bab al-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and ultimately to the Suez Canal, is one of the world’s most vital maritime corridors, with approximately 12 percent of global seaborne oil passing through it. Any attempt to restrict access to this waterway would compound the economic impact of tensions already affecting the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has previously tightened control, disrupting a route responsible for nearly one-fifth of global oil shipments.
Iranian state-affiliated media outlets, including Tasnim News Agency, cited sources from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as warning that Tehran could “open other fronts” if provoked by military actions in the Persian Gulf or the Sea of Oman. The statements suggested that any attempt to impose costs on Iran through naval operations or territorial incursions would be met with retaliatory measures designed to increase pressure on adversaries.

Reports from Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency indicated that the Iran-backed Houthi movement, also known as Ansarullah, may join the conflict more directly. Based in Yemen, the group has previously targeted shipping lanes in the Red Sea and could play a role in attempts to assert control over the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, significantly expanding the geographical scope of the confrontation.
The Houthis have already demonstrated their capability to disrupt maritime traffic, having reduced vessel movement in the Red Sea since October 2023 through attacks linked to regional tensions. Iran’s continued support for the group has drawn international scrutiny, particularly as global powers monitor the potential for coordinated actions that could threaten critical shipping routes and heighten instability across the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reiterated that Tehran has intelligence suggesting possible attempts by adversaries to seize Iranian territory with regional backing. He warned that any such move would trigger sustained retaliatory strikes against the supporting country’s infrastructure. As tensions escalate, analysts caution that disruptions at both Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb could have severe consequences for global energy markets and international trade, intensifying pressure on all parties to avoid further escalation.
