Iran has announced the detailed schedule for the state funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with his burial set to take place on July 9, 2026, in the northeastern city of Mashhad. The announcement was issued by the Committee for the Commemoration of the Ascension of the Mujahid Martyr Imam on June 13, 2026, outlining a multi-city ceremonial programme spread over five days across Tehran, Qom and Mashhad.
According to the released schedule, farewell ceremonies will begin on July 4 and July 5 at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla in Tehran. A funeral procession is planned through the Iranian capital on July 6, followed by another procession in the holy city of Qom on July 7. The final stage of the ceremonies will be held in Mashhad on July 9, culminating in the burial at the shrine of Imam Reza, a site of major religious significance in Shia Islam.
The committee also stated that the ceremonies will include the burial of four members of Khamenei’s family who were reportedly killed alongside him, including Dr. Misbah al-Huda Baqeri Kani, Sayyida Bushra Hosseini Khamenei, Zahra Haddad Adel and Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani. Officials said the arrangements are being coordinated as part of a broader state-level commemorative process.

The funeral timeline has seen multiple postponements in recent months. An earlier date in March 2026 was reportedly deferred as regional tensions escalated, followed by indications that the ceremonies would be held during early Muharram. However, those plans were also delayed, with authorities now confirming the revised July schedule. Officials have not publicly detailed the reasons for the repeated changes.
The announcement comes amid a period of heightened geopolitical sensitivity, with ongoing regional conflicts and international negotiations reportedly influencing Iran’s internal and external political environment. The transition in leadership and evolving diplomatic dynamics have added further significance to the timing and scale of the funeral arrangements, which are being closely watched in regional capitals.
Further details regarding public participation, security arrangements and official attendance are expected to be released separately by the organising committee as the date approaches, according to the statement.
