India unveiled its priorities for its 2026 BRICS chairship under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” during the first meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas held in New Delhi on February 9–10. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that India’s chairship will focus on a people-centric approach across various sectors.
The meeting was chaired by MEA Secretary (Economic Relations) Sudhakar Dalela and Joint Secretary (Multilateral Economic Relations) Shambhu L. Hakki, India’s BRICS Sherpa and Sous Sherpa respectively. Delegates included Sherpas and senior officials from BRICS and partner countries, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the UAE.
Multiple Indian ministries and departments presented proposed activities across thematic areas such as health, agriculture, labor, disaster risk reduction, climate, energy, innovation, ICT, security, counter-terrorism, and economic and financial cooperation. The discussions also included institutional development and strengthening of BRICS mechanisms.

Reflecting India’s people-focused approach, presentations were made on cooperation in sports, youth engagement, cultural initiatives, the BRICS Academic Forum, Think Tank Council, Civil Forum, Women’s Business Alliance, and the BRICS Business Council. Delegates visited the National Crafts Museum, Hastakala Academy, and Akshardham Temple to explore cultural initiatives.
According to the MEA, the BRICS members and partner countries appreciated India’s priorities, noting that the agenda builds on past cooperative efforts and emphasizes resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability. The Sherpas will continue to meet regularly throughout the year to coordinate efforts across thematic tracks.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar lauded the delegations for their suggestions and perspectives, highlighting BRICS as a “valuable forum for international cooperation, consultation, and coordination” as it celebrates 20 years. He reiterated India’s commitment to advancing a people-centric agenda for the grouping in 2026.
