Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Sunday expressed gratitude to Narendra Modi for India’s swift fuel assistance amid ongoing disruptions in West Asia. Confirming that 38,000 metric tonnes of fuel had reached Colombo, Dissanayake said the shipment helped alleviate immediate shortages and stabilize energy supplies in the country.
In a post on X, the Sri Lankan President noted that he had recently discussed fuel supply challenges with PM Modi and appreciated India’s prompt support. He also acknowledged the role of S. Jaishankar for close coordination in ensuring the delivery of the fuel shipment.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders held talks on March 24 to address the evolving West Asia crisis and its impact on global energy security. They emphasized the importance of keeping key shipping routes open and secure to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies worldwide.

The shipment comes at a critical time for Sri Lanka, which has faced recurring fuel shortages due to rising tensions in the Middle East and the global impact on energy markets. The delivery of 38,000 MT of fuel is expected to provide immediate relief to Sri Lankan consumers and businesses, helping maintain essential services and industrial operations while longer-term solutions for energy security are explored.
India’s intervention has been widely welcomed by Sri Lankan authorities as a demonstration of timely and practical bilateral cooperation, reinforcing the close ties between the two nations in managing critical regional challenges.
